The Proposition
The monument, in the shape of the bow of a boat, has been erected in the West Beach car park area, this being close to where the boats would have been launched on that fateful day - their last.
A Bronze Plaque will be contained within the structure outlining the story of the disaster, and a further panel with a chart showing the visible landmarks on the horizon will be of interest to visitors and locals alike.
There will also be information relating to the fishing practices and village life in 1806.
The memorial will commemmorate the moment in time which effectively led to the birth of the town of Lossiemouth.
The disaster triggered an influx of men to Stotfield and expansion of the fishing industry. This was a significant moment in the history of our town.
Where are we now?
The Stotfield Disaster Memorial Committee is a registered charity.
Our No. is SCO 37748.
Having had the foundation stone laid prior to Christmas, a Dedication Service conducted by Murray Campbell of the RNMDSF took place at the memorial site at 12:30pm on Christmas Day in bright, crisp and calm conditions, not unlike the reported weather on the fateful Thursday in 1806.
The monument was designed locally and built from granity supplied by Fyfe Glen Rock Oldmeldrum.
The construction was carried out by local builders Stewart Souter & Sons of Lossiemouth.
The completion of the project is expected by September 22nd, when the monument will be open.
