Who are we?

The purpose of our group is to educate the community in the local history and traditions of daily life as it was in the small fishing village of Stotfield 200 years ago. In furtherance of this purpose we aim to bring the historical events of the Stotfield Disaster story to the local schools and community groups by way of a play and literature and as a permanent focal piece we aim to erect a memorial to the Stotfield Fishing Disaster of 25th December 1806.

What was the Stotfield Disaster?

25th December 2006 marks the bicentenary of the ‘Stotfield Disaster’. On Christmas Day 1806 the entire able-bodied male population of the village of Stotfield was lost at sea during a freak storm which claimed 21 lives and left 17 widows and 49 fatherless children (two of the women having been pregnant at the time).
